MAINTENANCE WORKER

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION:    The Maintenance Worker performs general maintenance in all areas of the city including, but not limited to painting, hauling, operating equipment and vehicles, landscape maintenance, construction and caretaking of city buildings and equipment.

CLASSIFICATION:  The position of Maintenance Worker for Public Works is considered a non-exempt position as defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act.

REPORTS TO:  Maintenance Workers report to the Foreman.  The Assistant Foreman prepares day-to-day work schedules for Maintenance Workers.

DUTIES:  
Customer Service:

  • Maintains excellent public relations
  • Responds to calls for assistance in a timely manner

Scope of Work/Responsibilities:

  • Performs various tasks of labor as required by daily scheduling
  • Maintains and repairs city recreational areas
  • Assists Holmes Beach Police Marine Patrol
  • Picks up and disposes of dead animals from the roadways or beaches
  • Repairs and replaces signage and sidewalks
  • Builds benches and bike racks
  • Experience in drainage system repairs preferred
  • Knowledge of construction of new catch basins, sediment traps and erosion mitigation preferred
  • Ability to build, clean and maintain storm drain grates preferred
  • Installation and maintenance of pedestrian crosswalks
  • Performs general maintenance of all public city facilities
  • Regularly inspects city rights-of-way for clear visibility
  • Inspects city signage
  • May be required to report to City Hall in the event of an emergency
  • Emergency management responsibilities may include the following:
    • Pre-Storm
      • Assist in the preparation of the cargo trailer for transport to the mainland
      • Assist in the preparation of fuel levels, generators, equipment and sandbag filling station
      • Assist in the preparation of City buildings and other City assets prior to storm landfall
    • Post-Storm
      • Assist the First-In teams in damage assessment
    • Duties, responsibilities and activities may change or new ones may be assigned at any time with or without notice

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:  
Skills:

  • Must possess a variety of skills to complete a variety of tasks required by a general maintenance position
  • Must have detailed knowledge of material and equipment with which to complete maintenance
  • Landscape experience preferred
  • Ability to be able to operate heavy equipment, such as an excavator, preferred
  • Must have a valid Florida Driver’s License
  • CDL license preferred
  • Must be able to pass a background check, drug screen and COVID test

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in all weather conditions including seasonally hot temperatures and high humidity
  • May work with chemicals, vapors, dust and exhaust
  • Ability to lift, carry or shovel objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to manipulate and move heavy materials, equipment and supplies
  • Ability to climb on to large equipment
  • Ability to operate a variety of industrial tools and machinery
  • Ability to work around equipment that generates noise, vibration and heat

Educational Qualifications:

  • High school or GED
  • A combination of proven skills and knowledge and experience that lend themselves to completing maintenance tasks in a timely and correct manner
  • Possession of required licensures and certificates as required by the State of Florida
